Tomorrow will be the official launch of Lancôme make-up collection by Denis Gagnon at The Bay shop of St. Catherine Street in Montreal. To mark the occasion, I have attached an interview that I conducted as part of my work at Infopresse. I spoke with Elise Dufour, brand director for Lancôme Canada, as a result of a collaboration with Denis Gagnon for a range of cosmetics.

Lancôme is a global brand, what was his approach behind his association with a local brand like Denis Gagnon?
Julie Tremblay, Communications Manager of Lancôme Canada, gave birth to this collaboration in three stages. The first dates back to the 10th anniversary of the brand Denis Gagnon, held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and for which the official makeup artist for Lancôme Canada, Lora Spiga, worked with Denis. We then had the opportunity to work with him for Toronto’s Festival of Arts, Luminato, which has been held last June. This has led to the next step, which is the exclusive collaboration with Denis and Lora for a Lancôme makeup collection. Denis is well known in Quebec and he’s pretty much the favorite of all the women who work here. So there was an emotional side, it's not just a business project.

What was his involvement in the project?
He chose elements that would form the collection according to his favorites shades and products. He also collaborated on the design of the packagings. He brought a personal touch that recalls his work with leather and zippers, not to mention Lancôme’s rose. The unveiling will take place at The Bay (La Baie) with a few weeks of premiere, the last two weeks of August. During this period, a bag designed by Denis Gagnon exclusively for Lancôme will be offered with purchase exclusively at The Bay, before the collection is distributed to selected Lancôme counter in Canada.

The two brands in this project have distinct images. What was the purpose of bringing them together?
Initially, we speak of two luxury brands. It’s a bit each brand’s DNA, with different expressions, but which comes well together. Denis Gagnon's style is rock and glamorous, it lends itself very well to Lancôme's make up , which allows, without limitation, to create looks of this specific style. There are also french roots shared with Lancôme, a French brand, and a french canadian designer like Denis Gagnon. It was interesting to make the marriage of culture. It was not a selection criterion, but it became a positive point of the experience. Collaborations between beauty and art is part of the overall philosophy of the brand Lancôme. This first collaboration was made with the Canadian photographer Raphael Mazzucco, who had developed a collection in December 2009. Then there was Mark Fast, the Canadian designer, last summer for Luminato. It is also important that we continue to nurture these partnerships, for example, Raphael Mazzucco photographed the campaign for Denis Gagnon’s collection.

Do you carry the idea of a fourth project in collaboration with Denis Gagnon? Are there other collaborations of this kind planned with other artists?
We will update the next two projects coming out in June and August, but we have certain guidelines with the artists we work with. Time will tell. It's part of a development which we feel very strongly about. So we markdown for other future opportunities. It is too early for details, as we have a lot of things to come this year with Denis. But such collaborations are a journey that goes back to 2009 and that will certainly be apart of the future of Lancôme.
